[R51]Rep. Zent: First piece of legislation passes the House

Entry Description

STATEHOUSE — State Representative Denny Zent (R-Angola) saw his first piece of legislation passed out of the House yesterday. Rep. Zent co-authored House Bill (HB) 1099 which deals with rules for physician assistants.

“As a medical professional, I am very conscious of the needs of the healthcare community,” said Rep. Zent. “I took the opportunity to co-author a bill that brings some common sense reforms to the roles of physician assistants.”

HB 1099 allows physician assistants that meet specific practice requirements to prescribe schedule II controlled substances. Physicians who supervise physician assistants will now be allowed to authorize their assistants to prescribe a controlled substance for an aggregate 30 day supply. As the law stands today, physician assistants may only prescribe a one-time 30 day supply.

The Affordable Care Act will increase the daily workload for physicians. HB 1099 provides a small remedy by allowing more flexibility for physician assistants, so that physicians can work more efficiently.

“HB 1099 will reduce the “brain drain”.  Three universities in Indiana have physician assistant master’s programs - Butler, St. Francis and Indiana State,” said Rep. Zent. “By expanding the privileges of physician assistants in our state, more students will be inclined to stay in Indiana after they graduate.”

HB 1099 passed with unanimous support on third reading in the House. It will now be sent to the Senate for further discussion.
