Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (March 28, 2013) — Two bills sponsored by State Sen. Ron Grooms (R-Jeffersonville) to promote high-quality health-care options for Hoosiers passed the Senate this week.

Grooms, a practicing pharmacist for more than 40 years, has worked this session to advance several pieces of legislation to improve public health in our state. His recently approved legislation includes:

• House Bill 1464 – Allow pharmacists to administer more types of immunizations than under current law. The additional immunizations include: pneumonia (for individuals at least 65 years of age), tetanus, diphtheria, meningitis, acellular pertussis (Tdap) and human papillomavirus (HPV).

• House Bill 1099 – Give physicians’ assistants in Indiana more freedom to provide additional medical services under the supervision of a licensed physician.

Grooms said both of these bills are designed to give Indiana families more choice in how and where they receive medical care.

“With rising health-care costs and greater public demand for medical services, it’s important for Hoosiers to have options,” he said. “Often, it is convenient and cost-effective to visit a local pharmacy to receive physician-ordered immunizations. These two bills promote this type of flexibility in our health-care industry while ensuring that all procedures are carried out under strong standards and protocol.”

HB 1464 and HB 1099 now return to the House for further review.
