[ISP] Indianapolis Woman Killed on I-65
Start Date: 4/1/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 4/1/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

Jasper County-An Indianapolis woman was killed yesterday evening, when she walked out in front of traffic on I-65.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Dennis Simcoe and Probationary Trooper Brandon Bohling of the Lowell State Police Post revealed that Betty Rush, 66, of Indianapolis, for unknown reasons walked out into the right lane from the outer shoulder onto I-65 north bound at the 230 mile marker (this is the Demotte/Roselawn exit) at approximately 9:10 p.m., yesterday.

A 2013 Hyundai, traveling in the right lane, driven by a 22-year-old male from Gary, could not avoid Rush and struck her with the front passenger side. A 2005 Freightliner semi-tractor, driven by a 56-year-old male from Dallas, North Carolina, also in the right lane, then struck Rush. It is also believed Rush was struck by several more vehicles who may not have realized it was a person.

Rush was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jasper County Coroner. Her family was notified.

Rush’s vehicle was later found at a local truck stop.

No one else was injured.

The right lane was closed until approximately 3:00 a.m., for removal of the deceased, investigation of the crash and clean-up.

All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
