Start Date: 3/7/2016Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 3/7/2016
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS (March 7, 2016) – Congratulations to Elizabeth Bowling on winning the Hoosier Heroines Essay Contest, hosted by the Indiana Secretary of State’s Office!

Each year, students in grades 5-9 have the opportunity to complete an essay challenge for a chance to visit the Indiana Statehouse as a special guest of First Lady Karen Pence and Indiana’s statewide female office holders.

This year, the 6th grade students were encouraged to discuss a pivotal moment in the women’s suffrage movement and the role a Hoosier woman played in it. All of the sixth grade essay’s were submitted to the Secretary of State’s office. Secretary Lawson chose Elizabeth Bowling as the winner of the 6th grade essay contest.

Elizabeth’s essay stood out from the rest. Her essay focused on an extraordinary Hoosier Heroine, Zerelda Gray Wallace, who transformed Indiana history forever by paving the way towards a woman’s right to vote.

“I choose Elizabeth’s essay because of her detailed explanation of how Zerelda Gray Wallace made a difference in the world by helping women get the right to vote through bravery and leadership,” said Secretary Lawson. “Elizabeth’s essay eloquently told Wallace’s story and it will help others understand how her courageous actions of standing up for what is right, changed the course of our nation, giving half of the population the right to vote.”

On March 30th, Elizabeth will visit the Statehouse where she will read her essay aloud and spend some time with Secretary Lawson’s staff.
