Entry Description
Overnight Restrictions on U.S. 31
To Begin Temporary Widening
WESTFIELD, Ind. – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors will begin nighttime lane restrictions next week to facilitate temporary pavement widening in preparation for an upcoming work zone traffic shift on U.S. 31.
Rieth-Riley Construction will restrict traffic lanes on northbound U.S. 31 between 146th Street and 169th Street beginning Tuesday, March 5 at 9 p.m. Lane restrictions are expected to end by 6 a.m. and resume each night for approximately three weeks. The work is weather dependent.
Rieth-Riley will be widening the east shoulder of northbound U.S. 31 to prepare for an upcoming traffic shift that will place both directions of traffic on the existing northbound side of the highway while southbound lanes are upgraded to freeway standards.
INDOT is hosting a project open house at Westfield Middle School on Tuesday, March 12 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. to inform the public of all construction and maintenance of traffic details. A formal presentation will begin at 6:00 p.m. The open house format allows community members an opportunity to speak one-on-one with INDOT representatives and project team members.
INDOT recently awarded a $58.4 million contract for the new U.S. 31 Hamilton County between 146th Street and 169th Street, including new freeway exits at 146th, 151st and 161st Streets. The bid submitted by Rieth-Riley Construction of Goshen was the lowest among five contractors and nearly $5 million below engineers’ cost estimates.
New ramps will connect 146th Street to the north with Greyhound Pass and 151st Street with a “split-diamond” interchange. A new freeway exit at 161st Street will have roundabouts controlling ramp and cross traffic. Local traffic on Union Street and 156th Street will pass under U.S. 31 with no on or off ramps.
More information about the new U.S. 31 Hamilton County and details about how to receive project updates can be found online at www.us31hamiltoncounty.IN.gov. |
