[r46] Hoosier farmers recognized for achievements
Start Date: 3/22/2013 All Day
End Date: 3/22/2013
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE - State Representative Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) congratulates the Megenhardt family from Owen County for receiving three Hoosier Homestead Centennial Awards. The awards were presented today by Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann and Agriculture Director Gina Sheets at the Indiana Statehouse.

“I congratulate the Megenhardt family for their extensive commitment to Indiana’s agricultural community which is the driving force to our state’s economy,” said Rep. Heaton. “I am grateful for this family’s 100 year plus contribution to our state and wish them a plentiful harvest for another 100 years.”

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes families with farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more.
Two portions of the Megenhardt Farm were purchased and owned by the family since 1895 –with a third plot added in 1908. Located in Coal City, Ind., the Megenhardt family was recognized with three awards – one for each piece of land purchased – for their hard work and commitment to agriculture.

The program began in 1976 to acknowledge the contributions families have made to Indiana agriculture. More than 5,000 farms have been recognized since the program was established.

Two awards ceremonies are held each year, in the spring and summer, to commemorate the achievements of the many outstanding Hoosier farmers across the state.

“We must continue to show Hoosier farmers just how much we appreciate their commitment and dedication to Indiana agriculture,” said Rep. Heaton. “The Homestead Hoosier Award is a great way to let these families know that their longevity and hard work is noticed and highly appreciated.”
