Entry Description INDIANAPOLIS—The Indiana Senate recently passed a House bill sponsored by State Senator John Broden (D-South Bend) to expand living options for active Hoosiers age 55 and older.
“Offering a high quality of life to older Hoosiers strengthens our communities as a whole,” Sen. Broden said. “This legislation gives towns the mechanisms to meet this growing housing demand.”
Under House Bill (HB) 1359, cities and towns would have the option to create a program for age-restricted communities under a redevelopment commission. The program would allow developers to start up the new neighborhoods using the same resources and funding mechanisms used for developing blighted areas, such as by issuing bonds and creating special tax districts. Including age-restricted communities in redevelopment commissions also offers local governments an alternative solution to housing problems in some areas.
Age-restricted communities are gaining popularity among seniors looking to maintain active and independent lifestyles. The neighborhoods offer amenities such as lawn care and recreational opportunities for exercise and social involvement. Residents also tend to have high rates of volunteerism in their cities and towns.
HB 1359 unanimously passed out of the Senate Committee on Local Government and the full Senate by a vote of 41-7. The bill will now return to the House of Representatives where the author of the bill will have the opportunity to consider changes made in the Senate.
Sen. Broden represents Senate District 10, which includes the cities of South Bend and Mishawaka, and portions of Portage, Penn, Centre and Clay townships in St. Joseph County. For more information on Sen. Broden, visit www.IN.gov/s10.
