End Date: 3/5/2014
Entry Description
Honoring a great man, Pastor Burton

This past weekend, Hamilton County lost a great person with the passing of Pastor Tom Burton on Saturday. Pastor Burton was a good friend of mine and a wonderful servant to the community. He had battled cancer for a long time but succumbed to it peacefully at his home while in the company of his loving family.

Pastor Burton has had a long history of service to the community and to the state at large. He started and pastored Christ Community Church of Hamilton County, established a Chaplaincy Department for the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, started the National Day of Prayer service at the courthouse and has been actively involved in numerous other programs around the county and state.

Pastor Burton was a volunteer chaplain for the sheriff’s office since he helped establish the department in 1992 and became a full-time chaplain in 2000, a position he held until his passing. While there, he started Bible studies, trained volunteers, conducted worship services and served as spiritual counsel for employees and inmates; changing the direction of many lives.

Around the community, Tom had served on the Hamilton County Mental Health Board, the Noblesville Mayor’s Advisory Board and the Riverview Hospital Chaplain’s Advisory Board. He helped develop the Spiritual Response Team for Hamilton County and a Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Disaster Response Team. Tom helped re-organize the Riverview Hospital Chaplaincy program and served as a chaplain there since 1990. He was a member and past president of the Noblesville Noon Kiwanis Club with me. Tom also served as an inspector and poll worker for the county as well as hosting the Noblesville 10 precinct polling site at his church.

Despite the long list of accomplishments and services he devoted to the county, his service did not stop there. He served on the National American Red Cross Spiritual Response Team, the International Conference of Police Chaplains Disaster Response Team and the Indiana Crisis Area Response Team. His deployments have sent him around the state and the nation, including deployments to Louisiana in the aftermaths of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Gustav in 2008.

Tom touched many of our lives, and he made an immeasurable impact on our community. He was a man of great character that thoroughly enjoyed giving back and helping others. His humility and kindness were his greatest assets. During his illness over the past several years, even during his toughest days, Tom always had a smile, always was positive and always knew better days were ahead for him. Tom’s passion, dedication and drive were truly inspiring, and I am thankful to have had the opportunity to have known him. I am thankful to have called him a friend. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy, spirit and devotion will live on.
