[multiple] [s31] Sen. Merritt Honored for Commitment to Reducing Substance Abuse, Protecting Young Hoosiers in Indianapolis Area
Start Date: 3/28/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 3/28/2013
Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (March 28, 2013) — State Sen. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) was honored Wednesday, March 27, with Drug Free Marion County’s Legislative Advocate Award for his work in preventing youth substance abuse. Drug Free Marion County is a local nonprofit organization aimed at reducing alcohol, tobacco and other drug use among youths and adults in the Indianapolis area.
“While it was an honor to receive this award, it is one I certainly share with many of my allies in the community, like Drug Free Marion County, who have been instrumental in recent efforts to reduce drug abuse and promote safety in our neighborhoods,” Merritt said. “Advancing legislation at the state level relies on grassroots organizations to help spread the word about new laws to protect young Hoosiers, and I’m grateful to have their support.”
Merritt has initiated several pieces of legislation this session to combat drug and alcohol abuse in Hoosier communities. Two key bills include: Senate Bill 168 to bolster law enforcement’s ability to test for intoxication and Senate Bill 536 to provide officers and prosecutors with more tools to crack down on dangerous synthetic drugs.
Additionally, in 2012, Merritt authored Indiana’s “Lifeline Law” to encourage young Hoosiers to call for help in the case of a medical emergency related to alcohol abuse and underage drinking.
Merritt’s efforts to promote youth safety and prevent underage drinking deaths were also honored this month by The Century Council’s 2012 Leadership Award. He was one of 17 legislators nationwide to be recognized.
