[ISDA] NEWS RELEASE: Lt. Governor Honors a family with Bicentennial Hoosier Homestead Award
Start Date: 3/28/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 3/28/2013
Entry Description
Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann recognized the Swafford Family from Union County with the Bicentennial Hoosier Homestead Award during a ceremony at the Indiana State House on Friday, March 22. Their farm is located in Liberty, Ind. and has been owned by the family since 1812. The Edwin Swafford family and the Thelma Swafford family received the award.

To be named a Bicentennial Hoosier Homestead, the farm must be owned by the same family for 200 consecutive years and consist of 20 acres or more or produce at least $1,000 worth of agricultural products per year.

“For a family farm to predate the statehood of Indiana, and to weather the storms of nature and the economy, demonstrates an incredible family legacy,” said Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann. “The Swafford family epitomizes the reason we celebrate Indiana’s Agriculture Appreciation Month and honor their commitment to carry on the farming tradition.”
“I am supposed be an old man and tough, but when they got us organized (at the Award ceremony) and announced our award, everyone applauded--- all of us were touched by that,” said Ed Swafford. “I had memories of my folks and my grandparents; it brought it all back.”

The Friday ceremony recognized 50 Hoosier families with Hoosier Homestead awards. Since 1976, more than 4,300 families have been recognized with the historic designation. The award was created to recognize the contributions these family farms have made to the economic, cultural and social advancements of Indiana. A complete list of the March 2013 recipients is available on the Indiana State Department of Agriculture website.
