Recognizing Hoosier Farmers

When we visit the grocery store or a big-box retailer, it can be easy to get lost in all the food options these days. It can easy to become complacent on how our favorite foods made it to the store shelves or even presumptive that they will always be at our fingertips for our enjoyment.

Since Indiana became a state and before, the long standing traditions of farming and agriculture were the original pillars of our state’s economy – and continue to be so. The Hoosier spirit is embodied in Indiana’s farmers as they get up at dawn to tend to their livelihood and come back in at dusk. They feed our country and fuel us to take on the day’s challenges; a gratifying job that deserves our sincerest appreciation.

Our appreciation should extend to families like the Anderson’s. Margaret Anderson and her family from Hamilton County have been putting food on the tables of Hoosiers since 1912. For over a century they have devoted their lives to the land and represented the strength of Indiana’s agriculture. Their family, and many others throughout Indiana who tend to their crops daily, has maintained their business and withstood the testament of time.

Last week, the Anderson family was recognized with over 50 other Hoosier families at the Statehouse for their dedication to Hoosier agriculture. They received the Hoosier Homestead Award, which was presented by Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann and Agriculture Director Gina Sheets.

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes families with farms that have been owned and operated by the same family for 100 years or more and consists of a minimum of 20 acres or produce $1,000 worth of agricultural products per year. The program began in 1976 to acknowledge the contributions these families have made, and more than 5,000 farms have been recognized since the program was established.

There are three levels of recognition family farms may qualify for: the Centennial Award (100 years of ownership), Sesquicentennial Award (150 years of ownership) or Bicentennial Award (200 years of ownership).

Two awards ceremonies are held each year, in the spring and summer, to commemorate the achievements of the many outstanding Hoosier farmers across the state. It is ceremonies such as these that shed light on the storied history of Indiana’s farmers and a glimpse into the strength of our traditions.

Last summer’s drought was devastating to farmers throughout Indiana and much of the Midwest. For many, it made us realize the causality of all that we do and that we all share a common bond. As more and more people head towards urban living, it will increase the importance of agriculture outputs.

In 2010, Indiana was ranked the eighth largest agricultural exporter in the nation, exporting $3.4 billion worth of primary commodities and processed goods. Approximately 18,100 Hoosier jobs and an estimated $620 million in income can be directly linked to these exports, according to the Indiana Business Research Center.

It is because of dedicated and hardworking Hoosier families like the Anderson’s that Indiana continues to be a leader in agriculture. I wish all the Hoosier Homestead recipients another 100 plus years of plentiful harvests and good fortune as they continue to build upon Indiana’s farming traditions.
