[multiple] [s23] Sen. Boots’ Bill to Strengthen Indiana’s Law Against Child Seduction Approved By House

Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (March 26, 2013) – State Sen. Phil Boots’ (R-Crawfordsville) legislation to strengthen Indiana’s law against child seduction gained House approval today by a 96-0 vote.

Boots said he introduced Senate Bill 53 to outlaw any sexual behavior between an adult and a 16- or 17-year-old with whom they have a professional relationship, even though the age of consent in Indiana is 16. Currently, the law is limited to school officials and military recruiters.

“While the incident that brought this issue to my attention involved a mental health professional, it didn’t make sense to just keep building on our list of professionals who should not abuse their relationship with a minor in a sexual manner,” Boots said. “This kind of behavior is wrong any way you shake it, and today’s legislation broadens our child seduction laws enough to make sure we don’t continue to find loopholes when determining who is and who is not protected by these laws.”

SB 53 now returns to the Senate for further review.
