[ISP] Suspended Driver Fails to Yield; Crashes with a State Police Car
Start Date: 3/21/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 3/21/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

Winchester – Today shortly before 9:30 a.m. Troopers Ray Otter Jr. and Ryan Davis were south bound on US 27 in a gray Charger with all emergency lights activated attempting to catch a traffic violator. As they approached CR 300 South an eastbound pickup on CR 300 stopped at the stop sign for US 27, then entered US 27 into the path of the Charger.

Trooper Otter swerved left to avoid the truck, but the truck hit the side of the Charger sending it into a spin. Trooper Otter, the driver, was uninjured. His passenger, Trooper Ryan Davis, was transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Winchester where he was treated and released for pain to his wrist and arm.

The driver of the 1996 Chevrolet Pickup, Caleb Burkhardt, age 25 of Winchester, was also uninjured. He was cited for Driving While License Suspended and Failure to Yield at a Through Highway. The main causes of fatal crashes in Indiana remains running off the road to the right, and failure to yield at stop lights and stop signs.

The Indiana State Police remain committed to reducing crashes and patrolling in high crash areas. We continue to monitor the top causes for crashes, and concentrating enforcement efforts on these causes.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
