Entry Description
INDIANAPOLIS—The House of Representatives recently approved a measure from State Senator Richard D. Young (D-Milltown) to assist veterans in expanding their educational opportunities after military service.

“More and more veterans are finding it difficult to transition from combat to civilian life after they’ve served their county,” Sen. Young said. “The passage of this bill is an important accomplishment toward helping our veterans gain quality education and access to job placement.”

Senate Bill (SB) 115 would provide universities with the opportunity to establish a Combat to College program if they have more than 200 enrolled veterans. Under the program, colleges would need to provide veteran students with centralized locations for admissions, registration and financial services; academic guidance programs; and job search assistance.

The proposal would also require reasonable accommodations at an institution’s fitness facility for disabled veterans and counseling services for veterans diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition, a Combat to College program coordinator would be responsible for a variety of tasks, including development of veteran-based internship programs and coordinating with departments to educate veterans on state and federal benefits.

After passing out of the House of Representatives by a vote of 96-1, SB 115 now moves to the governor for final consideration.

Sen. Young represents Senate District 47 which encompasses portions of Crawford, Dubois, Harrison, Orange, Perry and Washington counties. For more information on Sen. Young, his legislative agenda or other State Senate business, call 1-800-382-9467 or visit
