[multiple] [s23] House Committee Passes Sen. Boots’ Bill To Fight Child Seduction

Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (March 20, 2013) – State Sen. Phil Boots’ (R-Crawfordsville) legislation to toughen Indiana’s child seduction statute passed the House Committee on Courts and Criminal Code today and is one step closer to becoming law.

Senate Bill 53 would make it a crime for any adult who has a professional relationship with a 16- or 17-year-old to engage in sexual behavior with the teenager, even though the age of consent in Indiana is 16. The only two professions the current child seduction law applies to are school officials and military recruiters.

“I appreciate the wide-ranging support I received on this bill to clarify an inconsistency in our child-protection laws,” Boots said.  “This was an issue that was brought to my attention by a family in our community who underwent a traumatic ordeal because a medical professional abused a relationship with a young patient. It is my hope we can close this loophole in Indiana’s child seduction law before other families are affected.”

SB 53 passed committee by a 10-0 vote. The bill now moves to the full House of Representatives for further consideration.
