Entry Description

Northbound US 31 Restriction,
Lane Shift, 151st to 169th Streets

WESTFIELD, Ind. – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to temporarily restrict traffic on northbound US 31 between 151st Street and 169th Street on Friday and Saturday to modify pavement markings and shift northbound lanes.

Rieth-Riley Construction, the state’s contractor for the $58 million project, has been restricting the right lane of U.S. 31 during overnight hours, making preparations to shift two lanes of northbound traffic to the right. Rieth-Riley plans to make this shift beginning Friday, March 22 at 10 a.m.

Northbound traffic will be restricted to a single lane for short periods of time as northbound lane markings are removed and replaced between 151st Street and 169th Street. Contractors will begin in the right lane and replace northbound lane markings, working from the right to the left, until two lanes of traffic are shifted to the right. Left turn lanes in-between 151st Street and 169th Street will be removed as part of this traffic phase, but left turn lanes at these intersections will remain in place. All lane restrictions are expected to end by 3 p.m. Friday, but the operation will repeat Saturday, March 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. if needed.

Rieth-Riley plans to continue placing temporary pavement for widening along the northbound median beginning Monday, March 25 during daytime hours. Because northbound traffic is expected to be shifted to the right at that time, allowing contractors more room to safely complete the work, lane restrictions will not be necessary for the median widening.

Southbound traffic will not be affected, but will be shifted in the near future once median pavement is in place. An exact date will be announced before southbound traffic is shifted to share the existing northbound side of the highway. Contractors will then begin upgrading southbound U.S. 31 to freeway standards.

The New U.S. 31 Hamilton County between 146th Street and 169th Street will include a new freeway exits at 146th Street, 151st Street and 161st Street. 161st Street is expected to close on or after April 15 to begin construction of the new roundabout interchange. The official detour for the 161st Street closure will be signed and motorists will be directed north to 169th Street.
