End Date: 3/5/2013
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE – House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 19 recognizing Kendallville’s 150th anniversary was presented to city representatives by the General Assembly on Monday. State Representative David Ober (R-Albion) authored the resolution and presented it with Kendallville Mayor Suzanne Handshoe on the House floor.

“It is an honor to present a resolution recognizing a city with such a rich and vibrant history in our state,” said Rep. Ober. “Kendallville serves as a major industrial center, and over the years, the city has played a dynamic role in growing the Hoosier economy.”

The city was incorporated in 1863 and named after United States Postmaster General Amos Kendall, an appointee of President Andrew Jackson. Known for its famous vanilla and caramel production, the city houses many manufacturing facilities that produce machine parts and tools, various plastics and textbooks to list a few.

Since its founding, Kendallville has become the largest city in Noble County with a population of nearly 10,000. Some of those residents include people prominent in both Indiana’s and the nation’s history including; Arthur Mapes, author of Indiana’s state poem and Dr. Harold Urey, 1934 Nobel Prize recipient in Chemistry.

“I am so humbled and honored to receive recognition for Kendallville’s 150th anniversary celebration by Representative Ober and Senator Glick,” said Mayor Handshoe.

The Kendallville Mayor was joined by the following: City Council members Larry Davis and James Dazey II, Clerk-Treasurer Sheryl Hanes, Kendallville Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Michael Walton and members of the Kendallville Sesquicentennial celebration committee when the resolution was presented.
