[r26] Truitt Resolution urges INDOT to honor Medal of Honor Recipients with naming of Hoosier Heartland Corridor sections
Start Date: 3/22/2013Start Time: 9:00 AM
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE - State Representative Randy Truitt (R-West Lafayette) offered a resolution on the House floor urging the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to rename a one mile section of the Hoosier Heartland Highway that runs through Tippecanoe County in honor of Medal of Honor recipients.

“I believe that we must never forget the sacrifices that those brave men and women who have given their lives and shed their blood to defend our great nation,” said Rep. Truitt. “The section of the Hoosier Heartland Highway should be renamed to show that Indiana is proud of our men and women who have served our Nation.”

The Tippecanoe County Veterans Council, a group made up of 19 veterans service organizations in Tippecanoe County, propose the act of naming three one mile segments of the Hoosier Heartland Highway running through Tippecanoe County for three Medal of Honor recipients with ties to the community.  These recipients are:

• Lieutenant William P. Thompson, US Army, Company G 20th Indiana Infantry on 6 May 1864, Battle of the Wilderness, Civil War

• General David M. Shoup US Marine Corps, 2nd Marine Regiment on 20-22 November 1943, Battle of Tarawa, World War II

• Master Sergeant Thomas E. McCall, US Army, Company F 143rd Infantry Regiment 36th Infantry Division on 22 January 1944, Battle of Monte Cassino, World War II

All three recipients will be identified with signage in each direction with rank, name, armed force, date(s), battle and war. The sections will be part of the Hoosier Heartland Corridor nearest to Greenbush cemetery, battle Ground and Spring Vale Cemetery.

“Indiana is called “The Crossroads of America” and many travelers will have the opportunity to see these recipients honored as they travel on these roads. Indiana should be proud to join this worthy effort to recognize our heroes as many other states have done the same. This will show that Indiana is committed to acknowledging our past and the sacrifices that have been made as we progress into the future,” said Rep. Truitt.
