[s7] House Education Committee Approves Hershman’s Bill to Combat School Gang Activity

Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (March 26, 2013) — State Sen. Brandt Hershman’s (R-Buck Creek) bill aimed at combating school gang activity in Indiana is one step closer to becoming law after receiving approval today from a key House of Representatives committee.

Senate Bill 352, which passed 11-0 in the House Committee on Education, would allow the Indiana Safe Schools Fund to be used to provide educational outreach and training to school personnel concerning the identification and prevention of criminal gang activity. It would additionally require school boards to adopt anti-gang policies and awareness programs using model materials developed by The Indiana Department of Education.

“My goal for this bill is to help law enforcement officers and educators collaborate to combat the spread of criminal gang activity in Indiana schools and communities,” Hershman said. “In fact, I’ve worked with Tippecanoe County Prosecutor Pat Harrington and Project Safe Neighborhoods Anti-Gang Initiatives Director Kathryn Redd to develop this legislation. There’s a real need for it, as gangs infiltrate rural areas and use new methods of recruitment — like social media.”

Hershman also thanked State Rep. Randy Truitt (R-West Lafayette), who is sponsoring SB 352 in the House.

“I appreciate Rep. Truitt joining me on this bill,” Hershman said. “The idea came from to local officials, so it’s only appropriate that another Lafayette-area lawmaker help move it through the legislative process.”

SB 352 now moves to the full House for further consideration.
