[INDOT] SR 14 Road Construction Scheduled to Begin with Intermittent Lane Restrictions Monday, March 18
Start Date: 3/15/2013 All Day
End Date: 3/22/2013
Entry Description
ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces that SR 14, from West Hamilton Road to Scott Road in Allen County, will have intermittent lane restrictions beginning Monday, March 18, weather permitting. The contractor will begin work for placement of temporary pavement, widening the existing westbound lanes to allow traffic flow both in both directions during the SR 14 added travel lanes project. This initial work will require intermittent lane restrictions under the direction of flaggers during daytime hours, and is expected to be complete by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 22.

Motorists should be aware of merging construction traffic and shoulder work. Work will be performed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays. The temporary pavement widening will be followed by a traffic shift to allow construction of the eastbound added travel lane within the project limits.

There is a reduced speed limit of 40 mph currently in effect 24 hours a day, which will remain until completion of the project. INDOT asks drivers to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through any construction zone. The penalties for speeding and driving recklessly in a work zone include fines of up to $1,000 for speeding in a work zone and up to $5,000 for reckless or aggressive driving in a work zone. Drivers who injure or kill a highway worker may find themselves paying a $10,000 fine or serving up to eight years behind bars.

The project will consist of widening SR 14 from two lanes to four lanes, with a continuous two-way left turn lane, between West Hamilton Road and Scott Road. Other aspects of the project include curb and gutter, a 10-ft. trail on the south side and a 5-ft. sidewalk on the north side of the road. Three bridges will be widened and rehabilitated. One new bridge will be constructed in 2014 east of Scott Road, between Glencarin Boulevard and Carnegie Boulevard.

The contract was awarded to E&B Paving, based on the low bid of $13 million. The project is scheduled to be complete in the fall of 2014.

INDOT reminds drivers to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through a construction zone. For the latest news and information about INDOT, visit www.in.gov/indot.
