Indiana Works with TurboTax Amid Fraud Concerns
Indiana Identity Protection Program Catching Fraudulent Returns

Indianapolis (Feb. 6, 2015) - The Indiana Department of Revenue has been informed that increased instances of fraudulent tax returns have occurred via the popular TurboTax tax software. The department was informed directly by Intuit.

The department has analyzed existing Indiana returns for potential identity theft and has already put in place measures to protect both the state and its taxpayers from potential fraud and identity theft from this issue. Analysis indicates few, if any, fraudulent returns have been accepted in Indiana.

The department continues to accept tax returns via TurboTax but is subjecting them to additional identity theft and fraud checks based on the reported experiences of other states and extensive internal department analysis.

This situation does not affect the security and confidentiality of Hoosier taxpayers’ information with the Department of Revenue.

The department’s ability to stop fraudulent returns is a result of significant efforts in 2014, which continue in 2015, to stop identity theft and fraud. In 2014 the state received and stopped 74,000 individual tax returns based on fraudulent identities valued at $88 million in potential refunds.

Should taxpayers have questions about returns already submitted via TurboTax, they should initially contact TurboTax at 1-800-944-8596, or they can contact the department at 317-232-2240.
