STATEHOUSE (Feb. 12, 2013) – Legislation authored by State Sen. Michael Crider (R-Greenfield) allowing police to investigate threats posted to social networking websites today passed the full Senate 48-1.
Senate Bill 361 expands intimidation law by allowing police to investigate threats posted to platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. Currently, Indiana law is silent on whether online threats can constitute intimidation.
“When a threat is posted to a social networking website, law enforcement needs to be able to take action,” Crider said. “We cannot allow offenders to continue hiding behind their computers. No matter whether intimidation comes from a phone call or a Facebook message, Hoosiers must be protected against potential dangers.”
SB 361 also makes it a Class D felony to make a threat against a person who is at a hospital, school, church, religious organization or any other facility that is open to the public.
The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
