Entry Description The St. Joseph County Superior Court Judicial Nominating Commission is beginning the process of selecting a new superior court judge. Commission Chairman and Indiana Supreme Court Justice Mark Massa announced today. A vacancy on the St. Joseph Superior Court will occur on June 3, 2013, when Judge Michael P. Scopelitis retires.
Under state law, the Judicial Nominating Commission is required to nominate five candidates for appointment to the St. Joseph Superior Court when a vacancy arises. The final appointment will be made by Governor Mike Pence. Under the statute, only attorneys domiciled in St. Joseph County are eligible to be considered by the Commission for nomination.
Applications are available on the Supreme Court’s website at http://www.in.gov/judiciary/2621.htm and in the St. Joseph County Clerk’s Office. All applications must be turned into the St. Joseph County Clerk by Friday, March 8, 2013 at 4:30 p.m. (EST). The Commission will meet on Monday, March 18, 2013 to interview the applicants.
The Nominating Commission was established by the Indiana General Assembly in 1973. It consists of seven members. Three of the members must be admitted to the bar and are selected by the lawyers of the county and three must be non-lawyers appointed by a committee consisting of the judge of the St. Joseph Circuit Court, the mayors of South Bend and Mishawaka, and the president of the board of St. Joseph County commissioners. The seventh member, who serves as the chairman of the Commission, must be a justice of the Indiana Supreme Court or a judge of the Court of Appeals appointed by the Chief Justice of Indiana. Justice Massa serves as Chairman. |
