[IEDC] State Selects 20 Small Businesses for Economic Entrepreneurship Awards
Start Date: 2/6/2013 All Day
End Date: 2/6/2013
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (Feb. 6, 2013) – Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann will join business leaders from across the state this afternoon to present 20 companies with the Indiana Small Business Development Center’s Economic Development through Growth and Entrepreneurship (EDGE) Awards during a Statehouse ceremony.

Sponsored by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation's Small Business Development Centers, the awards recognize clients of the agency's 10 regional offices located throughout the state in two categories - emerging and established. Recipients are chosen by their regional centers.

“Brand new ventures or seasoned businesses, these companies have made great strides for Indiana’s workforce and business landscape,” said Ellspermann. “With fresh ideas and new energy as a trademark, the Hoosier State will continue to encourage many more entrepreneurs like these to build our future. Congratulations to this year’s award recipients who have worked hard to earn this recognition.”

Together, these businesses represent 195 full-time Indiana jobs and in total finished 2012 with more than $6 million in sales.

Nearly half of the U.S. private sector workforce is employed by small businesses according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. The administration report says that small businesses account for the majority of net private-sector job creation in the United States over the last 15 years.

About IEDC
Created in 2005 to replace the former Department of Commerce, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation is governed by a 12-member board chaired by Governor Mike Pence. Victor Smith serves as the Indiana Secretary of Commerce and Eric Doden is the president of the IEDC.

The IEDC oversees programs enacted by the General Assembly including tax credits, workforce training grants and public infrastructure assistance. All tax credits are performance-based. Therefore, companies must first invest in Indiana through job creation or capital investment before incentives are paid. A company who does not meet its full projections only receives a percentage of the incentives proportional to its actual investment. For more information about IEDC, visit www.iedc.in.gov.
