Entry Description
Wearing sneakers, kicking cancer

The Statehouse sounded more like a basketball gym earlier this past week as the squeak of sneakers could be heard throughout the day. I joined other House legislators and staff, sporting sneakers in an effort to raise awareness of preventative measures to fight cancer. This fashion statement was in support of the “Suits and Sneakers” initiative sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Over the past week, you may have seen numerous coaches wearing their tennis shoes during their basketball games to raise awareness for living a healthy lifestyle to avert many preventable types of cancer. The challenge was extended to legislators in the House and Senate with basketball coaches Greg Lansing, from Indiana State University, and Todd Howard, from IUPUI, making appearances at the Statehouse. Both coaches encouraged legislators and staff to continue to raise awareness on ways to reduce the risk of cancer; a task we are all capable of doing in the hope of leading to a cure.

Cancer is something that affects thousands of Hoosiers all over Indiana. We all have either a relative or close friend who has gone through the emotional turmoil of having cancer, treating cancer or in the worst case losing their life to cancer. Just in the last year, 35,000 Hoosiers were diagnosed with cancer. The devastating ripple effects associated with having a loved one be diagnosed with this deadly disease can be overwhelming, but this initiative attempts to provide additional support for anyone affected. I encourage everyone to show their compassionate side and get involved in the fight against cancer – more information can be found at www.cancer.org.

Coming up this week, February 4th is World Cancer Day; everyone is encouraged to wear red to show support. In conjunction with the American Cancer Society, countless organizations and individuals will be spreading the word that “ending cancer should be a global health priority.” At 11am Eastern time, the American Cancer Society (@ACSGlobal) will host a Twitter chat featuring Chief Medical Officer Otis W. Brawley, MD, MPH (@OtisBrawley). Follow the events on Twitter using #WorldCancerDay. There will also be a live video broadcast of celebrity guest Olivia Newton-John on Google Plus at 3pm EST to raise awareness.

Considerable progress has been made in developing treatments and cures for various types of cancer, but far too many people still lose their life every year to this disease. By spreading the word, together, I hope we can rally behind this issue and find a cure for cancer.

The Legislature continues to have hearings on issues affecting Hoosiers. This week, some of the bills that were passed and sent to the Senate for their review included such issues as physician assistants, problem solving courts, outdoor event equipment and the sale of public schools.  If you have any questions, comments or concerns on these or any other issues, please do not hesitate to contact me at (317) 232-9647 or via email at h29@in.gov

It is hard to believe a month has already passed. I will keep you informed of the activities at the Statehouse, but in the meantime, try and stay warm during these extremely cold days.
