Broden job transparency proposal moves forward

Entry Description
INDIANAPOLIS—The Indiana Senate passed a bill on Tuesday co-authored by State Senator John Broden (D-South Bend) to require the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) to disclose information about taxpayer-funded incentives.

Senate Bill (SB) 162 would require corporations receiving incentives to submit an annual progress report to the IEDC. The report would include the projected number of employee hired, the amount of jobs actually created and an expected amount of financial investment. Company incentive funds would also be revoked if they did not meet conditions specified in the incentive contract.

“Hoosiers have a right to know how their tax dollars are being expended for job creation,” Sen. Broden said. “Companies that rely on taxpayer dollars to increase business should be responsible for providing that information to the public.”

The bill falls under a number of Senate Democrat proposals to promote transparency and accountability for entities receiving taxpayer-funded incentives.

After passing unanimously out of the Senate Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy, SB 162 was approved by the full Senate with a vote of 49-1. The bill will now move on to the House of Representatives for further consideration.

Sen. Broden represents Senate District 10, which includes the cities of South Bend and Mishawaka, and portions of Portage, Penn, Centre and Clay townships in St. Joseph County. For more information on Sen. Broden, visit
