INDIANAPOLIS—AN AMENDMENT TO EXTEND NEW STANDARDS FOR REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH TO ALL HOOSIERS WAS VOTED DOWN LARGELY ALONG PARTY LINES MONDAY. THE CHANGES TO SENATE BILL (SB) 489, PROPOSED BY STATE SENATOR MARK STOOPS (D-BLOOMINGTON), WOULD HAVE REQUIRED A PHYSICIAN TO CONDUCT A PROSTATE EXAM AND PROVIDE THE PATIENT WITH AN INFORMED CONSENT BROCHURE PRIOR TO PERFORMING A VASECTOMY. THE PROVISIONS MIRROR REQUIREMENTS OUTLINED IN SB 489 FOR A WOMAN SEEKING A MEDICAL ABORTION. SEN. STOOPS EXPRESSED HIS CONCERN WITH THE BILL AS IT SOLELY PERTAINS TO WOMEN SEEKING REPRODUCTIVE SERVICES, NOT BOTH GENDERS.
