[r63] Rep. Messmer congratulates Jasper High School Marching Wildcats
Start Date: 2/25/2013Start Time: 11:30 AM
Entry Description
STATEHOUSE- State Representative Mark Messmer (R-Jasper) presented a House Resolution to congratulate the Jasper High School Marching Wildcats on Monday for winning in the Indiana State School Music Association Class B State Marching Band Championship last November.

“I am very proud of the Marching Wildcats,” said Rep. Messmer. “As a musician, I know how hard these students have worked and how very close they have come to winning this championship in the past. This is certainly a great accomplishment for them as well as the school and our community.”

On November 3, 2012, the Jasper High School Marching Wildcats performed at Lucas Oil Stadium in front of thousands of fans and spectators. In the last 13 years, the Wildcats have finished as state runner up four times and have finished in 3rd place five times, narrowly missing out on winning by tenths of a point. Their achievement is even more noteworthy given the high school is the smallest school in Class B.

This is the first time Jasper High School has won the state championship since 1973, when the Marching Wildcats won the inaugural state marching contest. The band consists of 170 members under the direction of James Goodhue, Patrick Keeley, John Coller, and Phil Fleming.

The Jasper High School Marching Band had a successful season with other notable events including Grand Champions at the Kentucky Derby Pegasus parade in Louisville, Ky. and Reserve Grand Champion at the 51st Contest of Champions at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn., the longest running contest in the country.
