Bill proposing Pre-Kindergarten Voucher Pilot Program passes out of House
STATEHOUSE — Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) is pleased to announce that House Bill 1004, the creation of a high quality Pre-Kindergarten voucher pilot program, passed out of the House today with a vote of 92-06. Rep. Behning is the lead author on the bill with Rep. Suzanne Crouch (R- Evansville) as the coauthor.
“I am thrilled this legislation is moving through the General Assembly with bipartisan support,” said Rep. Behning. “A high quality Pre-K pilot program will give many children of poverty the opportunity to start their educational career in the best way.”
House Bill 1004 contains the eligibility requirements of a high quality Pre-K pilot program including the facilities, eligible students, program administration, funding and an early learning advisory committee. Currently, 61 percent of children (ages 3-4) are not enrolled in preschool. This bill has the potential to provide impoverished Indiana children with an early start to their education.
HB1004 received praise from Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis), Minority Leader Scott Pelath (Michigan City) along with other leaders of the House.
“Legislation like HB1004 and the House’s proposed budget will have a huge positive impact on our Hoosier children. As we move forward this session I hope we continue to make education our top priority and make responsible sustainable choices for their future. |
