[r26] Rep. Truitt works to save money for school corporations
Start Date: 2/18/2013Start Time: 11:30 AM
Entry Description
STATEHOUSE – State Rep. Randy Truitt (R-Lafayette) offered an amendment yesterday during a meeting for the Committee on Ways and Means to House Bill 1110, which proposes the flexible use of school funds for the payment of utilities and insurance for another two years.

Amendment No. 6, as proposed by Rep. Truitt, would allow school corporations to expend up to 4.5 percent of the payment of storm water fees.

“I discovered that our school corporation, like many others, is facing large storm water fees from the local municipality,” said Rep. Truitt. “If a school corporation is at a 3.5 percent cap, then they would have to pull this from their general fund. For West Lafayette Schools, what they would end up pulling from the fund was in the area of $50,000.”

The legislation dictates that the only amount able to be used above the 3.5 percent must be storm water fees from the municipality. The amendment passed in committee with a 17-1 vote. Rep. Truitt is a co-author on the bill, which is authored by Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Mount Vernon).

“We need flexibility with regards to various funds. Having these capabilities will allow us to take better care of our instructional programs,” said Superintendent of the West Lafayette Community School Corporation Rocky Killion. “The storm water fee has to be taken out of our general fund which is used for salary and instructional programs. Keeping the money detailed in the amendment prevents us from having to lose a position. It’s like saving a teacher.”
