Rep. Karickhoff:  Privacy of address bill passes through the House

STATEHOUSE – House Bill (HB) 1219, authored by State Representative Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo) and co-authored by Reps. Tim Neese (R-Elkhart), Jud McMillin (R-Brookville) and Linda Lawson (D-Hammond) passed through the Indiana House of Representatives Tuesday with a 96-4 vote.

HB 1219 requires a local unit of government operating a public website database containing the names and addresses of property owners to establish a procedure allowing law enforcement officers or victims of domestic violence to restrict disclosure of their home address to the general public. A reasonable fee may be charged to those who request that their home address be removed from the website.

“Sometimes privacy is necessary in keeping people safe, especially those people who might be specifically targeted like law enforcement officers,” Rep. Karickhoff said. “One of our main functions is protecting Hoosiers from harm, and this bill aids in that endeavor.”

The Indiana State Sheriff Association and the Fraternal Order of Police testified in the bill’s favor at the House Local Government Committee on Thursday, Jan. 24.

“Defending the whereabouts of police officers, their families and victims of domestic violence is a simple step that will potentially keep them out of danger,” said Rep. Karickhoff. “The information will still be public, as it should be, but people who want it will have to prove that their intentions are not adverse.”

The bipartisan bill will now go to the Senate for further consideration. Visit for more information regarding HB 1482.

State Rep. Mike Karickhoff serves on the Ways and Means Committee and the Natural Resources Committee.  He is also the chair of the Indiana Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations. Rep. Karickhoff represents portions of Howard and Grant counties, most of the city of Kokomo and the towns of Swayzee and Greentown.
