Rep. Karickhoff supports adoption legislation
STATEHOUSE – House Bill (HB) 1029 authored by State Rep. Sharon Negele (R-Attica) and co-authored by Rep. Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo) passed out of the House today with a 95-0 vote.
HB 1029 allows the relative of an adoptee and a pre-adoptive sibling to obtain medical history information about an adopted child. The person requesting this information must include the reason why the release of this information may be beneficial and a judge must approve the request.
“I authored a very similar bill last session which passed uncontested out of the House but unfortunately didn’t get a hearing in the Senate,” Rep. Karickhoff said. “I’m glad that this issue has been taken up by Representative Negele this session as I think it has the potential to help adopted Hoosier families.”
The idea for this bill came from a Kokomo family who had difficulty finding medical history information after their father, an adoptee, passed away from colon cancer. This bill attempts to reach a balance between the privacy of individuals and the benefit of the information to those seeking it.
HB 1029 also requires the court to appoint a confidential intermediary if certain requirements are met and the petitioner has shown an emergency medical need or good cause relating to the welfare of an interested person.
The bill will move to the Senate for further discussion and debate. To stay up-to-date on this bill and any other piece of legislation in the General Assembly, visit www.in.gov/legislative.
