[ISP] Miami Co. Teen Faces Identity Deception and Fraud Charges
Start Date: 12/18/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 12/18/2013
Entry Description

Miami County – Last night, a criminal investigation by Indiana State Police Detective Josh Maller resulted in a 16-year-old Miami County boy facing charges for identity deception and fraud.

On Monday, Maller started his investigation after a 54-year-old Howard County woman reported that her debit card was being used to make unauthorized internet purchases. The woman alerted BMO Harris Bank where she held a checking account. An alert bank employee was able to take a screen shot of the alleged unauthorized purchases on the woman’s account. The employee was forced to take a screen shot because as she was investigating the purchases, they were being deleted from the account by the unauthorized user.

Maller was able to track a package that was fraudulently purchased with the Howard County woman’s debit card. The package was scheduled to be delivered to a Miami County home. Indiana State Police officers set up surveillance on the residence. When the package was delivered, officers took the 16-year-old boy into custody. The boy lived at the home with his parents, who were purportedly not aware of the teens alleged internet activities.

Further investigation revealed the boy was allegedly able to hack into the Howard County woman’s account with minimal effort. The teen was able to view the Howard County woman’s unsecured Facebook page, which it appears he picked by happenstance. With information he found on the page, he was able to hack into her personal email account. Through the email account, he was able to gain access to the woman’s ITunes account. The ITunes account was set up to make purchases with the woman’s debit card.

The teen allegedly utilized the account/debit card to make over a $1,000 in purchases from the Apple store.

“This should serve as a cautionary tale for anyone who makes purchases or post personal information on the internet”, stated Detective Maller. “No accounts on the internet are 100 percent secure. It is recommended that internet users do not post personal information on social media sites; nor have accounts setup to make purchases with a pre-entered debit or credit card.”

The boy was released into the custody of his parents.
