[r84] Rep. Morris: Stay safe during the holiday season

Entry Description

Along with the shopping, parties, friends, family, Christmas carols, hot cocoa, lights, wreaths and gifts unfortunately comes an increased number of crimes and break-ins during the holiday season. It may not be something you think about, but the sad truth is that it is a reality.

Even though it is easy to assume the best in people, especially around the holidays, several local businesses recently reported break-ins. It is important to take extra steps to prevent crime against yourself, your family or your business. Below are some excellent tips the Fort Wayne Police Department issued as we go through the holiday season.

If you and your family are planning to leave town for Christmas or New Years, remember to stop your mail and newspaper. Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your home, and avoid leaving the dates you will be gone on your answering machine or social media.

At home and at your place of business, secure all exterior doors with deadbolt locks. Ensure lighting near the door is in proper working order, and look out for yourself as well as your neighbors. While alarm systems may be recommended, each site is uniquely different, so be aware of any unusual activities or suspicious persons, and report such things to the police.

When shopping in a crowded store or mall, women may want to wear their purses under their coats and may even consider carrying a purse that matches the color of their clothes or jacket. This will help reduce the possibility of theft. Also keep wallets out of site and in an inside jacket pocket.

It is important to avoid leaving purchased gifts in your vehicle, even if they’re hidden in the trunk. Also make sure wrapped gifts are not visible through the windows of your home.

There is nothing in this world that means more to us than our family and friends. While “stuff” can be replaced, our loved ones cannot. Be aware of threats and protect your families this Christmas.
