Entry Description

U.S. 31 Lane Restrictions to Set Bridge Beams

WESTFIELD – U.S. 31 traffic will be restricted tonight and tomorrow night as contractors set beams for new bridges over 156th Street and Union Street/Westfield Boulevard.

Rieth-Riley Construction, contractor for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), will close the right lane of northbound U.S. 31 between 151st and 161st streets each night at 9 p.m. The lane restrictions are expected to end by 6 a.m.

With both directions of traffic shifted to share the newly constructed southbound side of the highway, Rieth-Riley is currently upgrading the northbound side of U.S. 31 to freeway standards between 146th and 161st streets. The $58 million segment is expected to be open to traffic next spring and includes new ramps connecting 146th Street to the north with Greyhound Pass and 151st Street in a “split-diamond” interchange. A new freeway exit at 161st Street now has roundabouts controlling ramp and cross traffic.

Rieth-Riley is also the contractor for the 4-mile segment between 169th Street and 203rd Street, which includes a new single-point urban interchange at State Road 32, a roundabout interchange at 191st Street, and underpasses at 169th Street and 181st Street. Construction on the $63 million contract is expected to continue through 2014.

The New U.S. 31 Hamilton County improvements are part of three U.S. 31 corridor projects in Indiana intended to reduce congestion, improve safety and provide continuity of commerce and regional travel for a U.S. highway that stretches from Michigan to Alabama. The new 13-mile U.S. 31 Kokomo freeway recently opened to traffic just before Thanksgiving, allowing through traffic to avoid 15 traffic signals and more than 130 access points. The 20-mile U.S. 31 corridor between Plymouth and South Bend includes 15 miles of new highway alignment and four new interchanges scheduled to open to traffic by the end of 2014.
