Start Date: 12/5/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 12/5/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description
Vigo County—This evening at 7:12, Indiana State Police Troopers and Vigo County emergency agencies responded to a four vehicle crash in the area of 8703 Wabash Avenue (US 40 East) in eastern Vigo County.

Preliminary investigation revealed that an eastbound 2011 Toyota SUV driven by 25- year-old Catherine M. Burk of Brazil, IN. lost control, traveled off the roadway on the south side and upon reentering the roadway, crossed over center and struck a westbound 1997 Dodge pickup driven by 23- year-old Vance I. Smith of Terre Haute, IN. The impact caused the Smith vehicle to then strike an eastbound 2003 Ford Focus driven by 51-year-old Karen S. Price of Brazil forcing the Price vehicle into the westbound lanes where it was struck broadside on the passenger side by a 2002 Chevrolet pickup driven by 46-year-old William P. Hastings of Terre Haute, IN.

Catherine Burk was not injured and a medical episode may have been a factor in her losing control of her vehicle. Vance Smith was not injured. William Hastings was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for what is believed to be minor injuries.

Karen S. Price was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Vigo County Coroner’s Office. Family has been notified.

The roadway was only wet at the time of the crash, all occupants were using restraints, and drugs/alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash. No citations were issued.

The crash was investigated by ISP Master Trooper Matt Ames. Assisting with crash reconstruction were Troopers Brian Thomas, Tim Rader, and Don Curtis. Assisting agencies were the Seelyville-Lost Creek Township Fire/Rescue Department, Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, Vigo County Coroner’s Office, and Trans Care EMS.
