Entry Description

Dearborn County: This morning at approximately 7:40 a.m. Indiana State Police Motor Carrier Inspector Kim Hill was checking semi’s for weight and safety compliance at the West Harrison Weigh Station on I-74 at the Indiana/Ohio state line when a 2001 Volvo tractor pulling a flatbed trailer crossed the scales. MCI Hill observed the driver was having trouble parking the vehicle correctly on the scale to obtain its weight. After weighing the vehicle she asked the driver to park in the back lot and report back to the scale house with his driver’s license and paperwork for the truck and its load. When the driver came back into the scale house he did not bring the items MCI Hill had requested. After speaking with the driver she detected an odor of alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath. Trooper Clifton Elston happened to be parked in the back lot of the weigh station during this time. MCI Hill contacted Tpr. Elston and asked for his assistance. Tpr. Elston observed the driver, later identified as 62 year old George Stephenson of Charleston, WV, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Further investigation at the weigh station revealed Stephenson had a cooler with beer and vodka inside his truck which is a violation of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Stephenson was transported to the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center where Tpr. Elston conducted a certified breath test. The result indicated Stephenson had a B.A.C. of .09 percent. Stephenson was charged with Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated and Violation of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
