Entry Description Oak Lake, a three-acre impoundment near the entrance to Clark State Forest and less than quarter-mile from State Route 31, is being drained by the Department of Natural Resources.
Although there is no imminent risk of dam failure, engineers recommended the draining for safety purposes because subsidence and water leakage has appeared on the dam, threatening its stability.
The dam’s valve has been opened to slowly reduce water levels. The lake has dropped 4 feet so far. Total lake depth is current 14 feet. The lake should be completely drained in the next two weeks.
Fishermen are encouraged to harvest fish, but must follow all fishing regulations. Many fish will likely wash out of the lake into nearby Pine Lake during the draining.
Additional study is needed to determine the extent and cost of repairing the dam.
For information, contact Pat Cleary, property manager, (812) 294-4306.
