Entry Description
State Sen. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) made the following statement regarding this week’s success in celebrating Statehood Day and official plans for commemorating Indiana’s 200th birthday in 2016:
STATEHOUSE (Dec. 12, 2012) – “This year’s Statehood Day was filled with excitement and educational opportunities for the fourth-grade students who visited the Statehouse to observe Indiana becoming the nation’s 19th state. As the Master of Ceremonies again this year, it was an honor for me to have the opportunity to lead the celebration and visit with so many of Indiana’s bright youngsters.
“I want to congratulate Greenwood fourth-grader Jamie Poynter for winning first place in this year's Statehood Day essay contest. Her sentimental essay on ‘What Indiana Means to Me’ was excellent, and I was so proud of her for standing in front of her peers and reading her thoughtful words.
“Having participated in Statehood Day festivities for many years, I look forward to celebrating Indiana’s 200th birthday on Dec. 11, 2016. As author of a bill that will statutorily create Indiana’s Bicentennial Commission, I will continue to work diligently as a member of this commission to give our Hoosier State the honor and dignity it deserves.”
