Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (Dec. 11, 2012) — State  Sen. Greg Walker (R-Columbus) recently joined other state officials in recognizing Greenwood fourth-grader Jamie Poynter for winning first place in this year's Statehood Day essay contest.

Poynter, who attends Greenwood Bible Baptist, read her essay to hundreds of students and educators who gathered for events at the Statehouse in Indianapolis on Tuesday. Judges chose her essay from more than 1,000 submitted by fourth-grade students from across Indiana.

“Jamie’s essay is very well-written, making it easy to see how much Indiana really means to her and her family,” Walker said. “It’s encouraging to know fourth-graders in my area and around the state have the opportunity to creatively express their feelings about Indiana and what it means to be a Hoosier.”

Tuesday’s Statehood Day festivities included student visits to executive, judicial and legislative offices as well as a program with remarks from government officials, special music, displays of original copies of Indiana’s 1816 and 1851 constitutions and the reading of Poynter’s winning essay.

“Although the seasons change, Indiana remains the same,” Poynter read. “Just as the seasons change, the seasons of the families that make up my great state of Indiana change, too. Some will need help at times. Yet my state bands together as families and practices the great ‘can do’ attitude that has made me proud to be called a ‘Hoosier.’”

Poynter and her family also met with Walker, who presented her with a Senate Certificate of Congratulations.

“I was pleased Jamie and her family took the time to visit,” Walker said. “Her efforts have brought honor to the entire Greenwood community.”

Walker said other fourth-grade students recognized in the contest included second-place Grace Long of Fishers and third-place Olivia Freeth of Avon.

Indiana became the nation’s 19th state on Dec. 11, 1816.

The Statehood Day essay contest and events are sponsored annually by the Indiana Statehouse Tour Office and Indiana State Library. More information can be found at www.in.gov/library/statehood.htm.
