[ATG] Consumer Alert: Hyundai, Kia offer consumer refund program
Start Date: 12/11/2012 All Day
End Date: 12/11/2012
Entry Description

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller is helping to spread the word about a refund program set up by Hyundai and Kia after customers received lower-than-advertised fuel economy on new car models.

Procedural errors at the automakers’ joint testing operations in Korea led to incorrect fuel economy ratings for 2011-2013 model years sold through Oct.31 of this year, according to an announcement made this month. The companies voluntarily created a consumer reimbursement program to correct the error that led to consumers not achieving the advertised fuel mileage by an average of 3 percent.

Here are the details of the program which is already in effect for Indiana consumers:

  • Eligible current and former vehicle owners should have been contacted by Hyundai or Kia. If not, consumers can visit www.hyundaimpginfo.com  or www.kiampginfo.com for information about the program and a list of eligible vehicles.
  • After consumers are registered, they can take their vehicle to their respective Hyundai or Kia dealership.
  • Reimbursement will cover the additional fuel costs associated with the fuel economy rating change. Customers will receive a personalized debit card that will reimburse them for their difference in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s combined fuel economy rating, based on the fuel price in their area and their own actual miles driven. In addition, the companies will add an extra 15 percent to the reimbursement amount for customers’ inconvenience.

Eligible owners can take their vehicles back to the dealership and refresh their debit card for as long as they own the vehicle.

Consumers have until Nov. 2, 2013, to register their vehicles for the program.

Zoeller said the consumer restitution program did not stem from a multi-state agreement, but was voluntary and followed discussions the companies had with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
