[SOS] Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson finishes second 92 county tour
Start Date: 11/21/2013 All Day
End Date: 11/21/2013
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS (November 21, 2013) – Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson completed a lap around Indiana’s 92 counties for the second year in a row. She has traveled to the most southern part of the state to the New Harmony Soap Company and clear to the opposite end of the state to Sutton’s Deli in Angola’s town square. Her final visit of the year was the North Township Thanksgiving Luncheon with Lake County senior citizens.

“My travels this year have allowed me to meet so many amazing Hoosiers and attend some uniquely Hoosier events,” said Secretary Lawson. “I went to the Frankfort Hotdog Festival, toured my favorite ketchup company, Red Gold, in Elwood, tried out some Harleys at Brandt’s Harley Davidson in Marion and toured one of the world’s most secure man made vaults, the underground distribution center in Marengo. It was a whirlwind of a year, but I’ll never forget those memorable stops.”

Secretary Lawson began the year by hosting 13 regional vote center meetings around the state to educate local election officials on the vote center process. These meetings helped facilitate the conversation many counties are having to decide if moving to the vote center model is the right option for their county.

Local election officials appreciated Secretary Lawson bringing the vote center meetings to their area of the state so much that she decided to start hosting roadshows to bring her office into a community for the day. During the roadshows, she met with financial planners to give them updates from the securities division of her office. The business services division of the office hosted free seminars to educate members of the community on new business laws and practices. Secretary Lawson toured Indiana’s vehicle manufacturing facilities and salvage yards and met with numerous auto dealers to gain a better understand of the auto industry and their specific needs. The roadshows were an opportunity for her to learn how to better serve Hoosiers and the industries she regulates.

Through all the travels, financial literacy for all ages has remained a top priority. Secretary Lawson crisscrossed the state visiting classrooms, civic groups and senior living communities sharing her message. She spoke with high school students about the basics of budgeting and how racking up credit card debt now can affect you down the road when you go to buy a house or a car. She discussed with senior citizens how to protect themselves from investment fraud.  She reached out to civic groups about the need to help teach our young people the basics of personal finance and how to help protect senior citizens from scam artist running Ponzi schemes. Secretary Lawson will continue her efforts to teach all Hoosiers about financial literacy through Indiana Investment Watch, an educational program designed to increase financial literacy in Hoosiers.
