U.S. 31 Restrictions Begin Monday North of S.R. 32

WESTFIELD – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractor Rieth-Riley Construction plans to begin Monday temporarily widening pavement along the northbound U.S. 31 median north of State Road 32. The work will require a left lane closure of northbound U.S. 31 from just past State Road 32 to approximately 203rd Street, which is expected to end before Thanksgiving.

A southbound left lane restriction near 203rd Street will also begin Monday and is expected to end by Thanksgiving. A temporary median crossover will be constructed that will be used to shift southbound traffic across the median next spring.

Rieth-Riley is widening the pavement this fall to minimize the possibility of weather delays in the spring, when both directions of traffic will be shifted to share the northbound side of the highway. The pavement widening is needed to accommodate the traffic shift that will allow contractors to begin upgrading the southbound side of the highway to freeway standards.

The $63 million contract spans four miles between 169th Street and 203rd Street and includes a new single-point urban interchange at State Road 32, a roundabout interchange at 191st Street, and underpasses at 169th Street and 181st Street. Construction is expected to continue through 2014.

The New U.S. 31 Hamilton County project to upgrade 13 miles of existing highway to freeway standards, including nine new interchanges, between I-465 and State Road 38 is part of Major Moves projects to upgrade or bypass congested sections of U.S. 31 near Indianapolis, Kokomo and South Bend. The three U.S. 31 corridor projects in Indiana are intended to reduce congestion, improve safety and provide continuity of commerce and regional travel for a U.S. highway that stretches from Michigan to Alabama.
