[r44] Rep. Baird: Several community development grants awarded to West Central Indiana
Start Date: 11/6/2013 All Day
End Date: 11/6/2013
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE – State Representatives Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) and Jim Baird (R-Greencastle) attended a ceremony honoring 24 Hoosier communities that received over $8M in community development grants. The event was held at the Statehouse yesterday where Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann presented the awards to the communities across Indiana.

Funded with federal dollars from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, 21 communities received grants from the Community Focus Fund (CFF) and three communities received grants from the Main Street Revitalization Program (MSRP). This was the 17th round of grants.

Both the CFF and MSRP aim to assist smaller Hoosier cities and towns with long-term community development initiatives. While the MSRP focuses on refurbishing the downtown areas of each awarded community, the CFF covers a broader spectrum of community enhancement projects, including the awards to Owen and Putnam counties.

Spencer, in Owen County, was awarded $400,000 for the construction of a new health center that will provide physical and behavioral help. The facility will be used by Centerstone of America, the parent company of the Johnson Nichols Health Clinic, which will offer these health services to the surrounding communities.

“This award is welcomed news for Owen County, and with this new health facility coming to Spencer, Hoosiers will be able to access high quality physical and behavioral help much easier,” said Rep. Heaton.  “Being able to access these health services close to home will significantly benefit and improve the quality of life for the Hoosier families in our community.”

In addition to Owen County, over $1M was awarded to Putnam County to help improve two water facilities as well as provide Cloverdale with a new fire truck.

“I’m very pleased that Putnam County received over $1M in grant funds which will strengthen these communities and benefit the families living there,” said Rep. Baird. “During economic hardship, smaller towns like Cloverdale and Roachdale can struggle with finding a funding solution for important projects like water treatment facilities or new fire trucks, so these grants will help improve these communities as they continue to expand and grow.”

Awarded $500,000, Putnam County received the grant to advance the Reelsville Water Authority’s drinking water system. The project will improve the water pressure in two areas as well as bring the facility up-to-date to meet the recommended standard for raw water transmission.

The town of Roachdale was also awarded $500,000 to improve their water distribution system. The grant is intended to make the water mains larger, provide new gate valves and hydrants and install meter pits in addition to improving overall water quality.

Cloverdale has been awarded $150,000 to purchase a new fire truck to serve the Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department’s service area. Replacing a 35 year-old model, the new truck will have enhanced pumping capacity and additional storage space for life-saving equipment.

The grants are administered through the Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) which will assist community leaders during the 18-month implementation process as well.
