[DCS] Howard Co. Dept. of Child Services is Recruiting Foster Parents: Informational Meetings in Kokomo Nov. 16
Start Date: 11/6/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 11/6/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

KOKOMO, Ind. (Nov. 6, 2013)—The Howard County office of the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) is looking for some adults with a strong desire to invest in the future. These potential foster parents are selfless caregivers that provide temporary supervision and stability for foster children during a challenging time in the children’s lives. Three informational meetings for prospective foster parents will be offered in Kokomo on Saturday, Nov. 16. Thirty-minute meetings will begin at 10 am, 10:45 am and 11:30 am.

“When innocent children are abused or neglected and it’s not safe to allow the children to stay in their own home, our first choice is to place them with fit and willing relatives,” said Marilyn Robinson, director of the Howard County DCS office. “But when suitable family members are not available, we always need to have good foster parents ready and willing to provide temporary care for our children in need.”

Foster parents can be stay-at-home parents or they can work outside the home. They can also be home owners or renters. Besides providing food and shelter, they assist with practical needs like helping with visits with the child’s family, taking them to medical and other appointments and ensuring there are extra-curricular activities.

Local foster parents are especially needed so school-age children removed from their homes can continue to attend their own school and maintain contact with their friends.

Each informational meeting will be led by foster care specialists from the Howard County DCS office. Foster parent responsibilities will be discussed as well as the licensing process, including the home study. In addition, a licensed foster parent will be on hand to answer questions. A willingness to step up and help a child in need is the most important prerequisite for becoming a foster parent.

The information meetings will take place at the Howard County DCS office, 217 E. Southway Boulevard in Kokomo (2nd floor).

There are more than 4,600 abused or neglected Hoosier children currently living in non-relative foster homes because it is unsafe for them to live in their own homes. In Howard County, 73 abused or neglected children live in foster homes.
