[DCS] Fulton Co. Dept. of Child Services Recruiting Foster Parents: Informational Meetings in Rochester Nov. 16
Start Date: 11/6/2013Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 11/6/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

ROCHESTER, Ind. (Nov. 6, 2013)—The Rochester County office of the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) is looking for some adults with a strong desire to invest in the future. These potential foster parents are selfless caregivers that provide temporary supervision and stability for foster children during a challenging time in the children’s lives. Three informational meetings for prospective foster parents will be offered in Rochester on Saturday, Nov. 16. Thirty-minute meetings will begin at 10 am, 10:45 am and 11:30 am.

“When a child is abused or neglected and it’s not safe to allow the child to stay in their own home, our first choice is to place with relatives,” said Lee Sones, director of the Fulton County DCS office. “But when relatives are not available, we always need to have good foster parents ready and willing to step up and provide a safe, nurturing environment until it is safe for the child to return home.”

Foster parents can be stay-at-home parents or they can work outside the home. They can also be home owners or renters. Besides providing food and shelter, they assist with practical needs like helping with visits with the child’s family, taking them to medical and other appointments and ensuring there are extra-curricular activities.

Local foster parents are especially needed so school-age children removed from their homes can continue to attend their own school and maintain contact with their friends.

Each informational meeting will be led by foster care specialists from the Fulton County DCS office. Foster parent responsibilities will be discussed as well as the licensing process, including the home study. In addition, a licensed foster parent may be on hand to answer questions. A willingness to step up and help a child in need is the most important prerequisite for becoming a foster parent.

The information meetings will take place at the Fulton County DCS office, 1920 Rhodes Street in Rochester.

There are more than 4,600 abused or neglected Hoosier children currently living in non-relative foster homes because it is unsafe for them to live in their own homes. In Fulton County, 19 abused or neglected children live in foster homes.
