U.S. 31 “Split Diamond” Interchange Opens to 146th Street

All Access Now Open on Southbound Side of New Ramp System

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The new southbound ramp between Greyhound Pass and 146th Street is now open to traffic. The ramp is part of a “split diamond” interchange system connecting 151st Street, Greyhound Pass and 146th Street with The New U.S. 31 Hamilton County freeway.

Rieth-Riley Construction, the state’s contractor for the $58 million project to upgrade U.S. 31 to freeway standards north of 146th Street to just south of 169th Street, opened access today on the final southbound “split diamond” ramp segment. Motorists can now access all southbound ramps connecting U.S. 31, 151st Street, Greyhound Pass west of U.S. 31, and 146th Street.

Contractors plan to shift northbound traffic to a permanent configuration north of 156th Street later this month. Construction is expected to continue through the winter on the northbound side of the freeway between 146th and 156th streets and the northbound “split diamond” interchange ramp system.

Rieth-Riley is also the contractor for the 4-mile segment between 169th Street and 203rd Street, which includes a new single-point urban interchange at State Road 32, a roundabout interchange at 191st Street, and underpasses at 169th Street and 181st Street. Construction on the $63 million contract is expected to continue through 2014.

Upgrading U.S. 31 to freeway standards from I-465 to State Road 38 is the largest and most aggressive road project ever implemented in Hamilton County. The New U.S. 31 Hamilton County is part of a Major Moves program to upgrade or bypass congested sections of U.S. 31 between Indianapolis and South Bend—reducing congestion, improving safety and providing continuity of commerce and regional travel for a U.S. highway that stretches from Michigan to Alabama.
