[s42] Sen. Leising: General Assembly Kicks Off 2013 Budget Session

Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (Nov. 20, 2012) — State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) gathered with fellow legislators today at the Statehouse for Organization Day — the ceremonial start of the 118th Indiana General Assembly’s budget session.

Organization Day is marked by the swearing in of new General Assembly members as well as the annual first roll call of all state lawmakers. This day also provides each House and Senate caucus with the opportunity to organize before session officially begins on Jan. 7.

The 2013 session is a budget year, meaning lawmakers will draft a comprehensive proposal to fund government services for the next two years. By law, the 2013 legislative session must be completed no later than April 29.

“Every legislative session is different, but one thing that never changes is the need to work together and across the aisle to help residents statewide,” Leising said. “This year we’ll focus on fiscal responsibility by passing an honestly balanced budget. Stable state finances are needed to promote the job growth necessary to support our struggling families. Still, I’m looking at other important issues for families including how state highway closings affect our small businesses and how we can make immunizations more affordable for our children.”

Leising said her other Senate priorities for the 2013 session include:

• Building on Indiana’s low-tax, job-friendly environment
• Protecting Hoosier children by improving Indiana’s Department of Child Services
• Improving education and parent responsibility
• Reforming Indiana’s criminal penalties
Additionally, Leising has been appointed as ranking member of the Senate Committee on Environmental Affairs and will serve as a member of the following committees in 2013 and 2014:

• Education and Career Development
• Health and Provider Services
• Utilities

As the 2013 session gets under way, Leising encourages Senate District 42 residents to contact her with any questions or comments they may have. Leising can be reached via email at or by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
