STATEHOUSE (Nov. 20, 2012) — State Sen. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) gathered with fellow legislators today at the Statehouse for Organization Day — the ceremonial start of the 118th Indiana General Assembly’s budget session.

Organization Day is marked by the swearing in of new General Assembly members as well as the annual first roll call of all state lawmakers. This day also provides each House and Senate caucus with the opportunity to organize before session officially begins on Jan. 7.

The 2013 session is a budget year, meaning lawmakers will draft a comprehensive proposal to fund government services for the next two years. By law, the 2013 legislative session must be completed no later than April 29.

“This legislative session will primarily be remembered for lawmakers’ work to create our state’s fifth-consecutive balanced budget,” Merritt said. “Fiscal responsibility is an incredibly important step in ensuring Indiana is recognized as a great place for employers to expand and locate. It’s also my goal to promote public safety through criminal law reform. I want to make certain Indiana is a safe place for our children to live and work in the future.”

Merritt said his other Senate priorities for the 2013 session include:

• Building on Indiana’s low-tax, job-friendly environment
• Protecting Hoosier children by improving Indiana’s Department of Child Services
• Further tightening Indiana’s synthetic drug laws
• Reforming educational credit time for sexual or violent offenders
Additionally, Merritt has again been elected as Senate Majority Caucus Leader and appointed as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Utilities. He will also serve as a member of the following committees in 2013 and 2014:

• Homeland Security, Transportation and Veterans Affairs; Transportation Subcommittee
• Public Policy
• Rules and Legislative Procedure
• Joint Rules

As the 2013 session gets under way, Merritt encourages Senate District 31 residents to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Merritt can be reached via email at by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
