Carmel legislator re-appointed to Senate leadership team
STATEHOUSE (Nov. 20, 2012) — State Sen. Mike Delph (R-Carmel) gathered with fellow legislators today at the Statehouse for Organization Day — the ceremonial start of the 118th Indiana General Assembly’s budget session.
Organization Day is marked by the swearing in of new General Assembly members as well as the annual first roll call of all state lawmakers. This day also provides each House and Senate caucus with the opportunity to organize before session officially begins on Jan. 7.
The 2013 session is a budget year, meaning lawmakers will draft a comprehensive proposal to fund government services for the next two years. By law, the 2013 legislative session must be completed no later than April 29.
“A balanced state budget is crucial to ensuring Indiana continues to thrive in an unstable economic environment,” Delph said. “Despite the economic downturn, we have maintained a triple-A credit rating and added tens of thousands of jobs to the Hoosier economy. Responsible financial policies will allow our state to continue this positive trend.”
Delph said other Senate priorities for the 2013 session include:
- Improving education through promoting vocational training and raising graduation rates
- Building on Indiana’s low-tax, job-friendly environment
- Protecting Hoosier children by improving Indiana’s Department of Child Services
Indiana Senate President Pro Tempore David Long (R-Fort Wayne) reappointed Delph as Assistant Majority Floor Leader for Communications.
“I am confident that Senator Delph’s knowledge and expertise will continue to serve him well on his responsibilities as Majority Floor Leader for Communications,” Long said.
Additionally, Delph has been appointed as ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and will serve as a member of the following committees in 2013 and 2014:
- Courts and Juvenile Justice Subcommittee
- Financial Institutions Committee
- Insurance Committee
- Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee
As the 2013 session gets under way, Delph encourages Senate District 29 residents to contact him with any questions or comments they may have. Delph can be reached via email at Senator.Delph@iga.in.gov or by phone at 1-800-382-9467.
